Intermittent Hypoxia-induced Changes in Tumor-associated Macrophages and Tumor Malignancy in a Mouse Model of Sleep Apnea.
Conclusion: Our findings support the notion that IH-induced alterations in TAMs participate in the adverse cancer outcomes reported in OSA. PMID: 24471484 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Checkpoint Blockade in Lung Cancer and Mesothelioma.
Abstract In the past decade, immunotherapy has emerged as a new treatment modality in cancer. The most success has been achieved with the class of checkpoint inhibitors; antibodies which unleash the anti-tumor immune response. Following the success in melanoma, numerous clinical trials are being conducted investigating checkpoint inhibitors in lung cancer and mesothelioma. The programmed death protein 1-protein death ligand 1/2 (PD-1 - PD-L1/2) pathway and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte associated protein 4 (CTLA4) are currently the most studied immunotherapeutic targets in these malignancies. In non-small cell lung cance...

Cancer and Sleep Apnea: Cutaneous Melanoma as a Case Study.
Abstract In recent years, a putative link between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and cancer incidence and outcomes has been advanced, and has resulted in a large number of supportive studies suggesting the validity of such assumption, as well as in a non-negligible number of negative studies that have cast doubt on the scientific merits of this association. However, among the various solid tumors explored to date, studies in both animal models and patient cohorts have indicated that OSA consistently enhances malignant melanoma aggressiveness properties. Here, we critically review the available evidence focused arou...

Respirable Crystalline Silica Exposure, Smoking, and Lung Cancer Subtype Risks: A Pooled Analysis of Case-control Studies.
CONCLUSIONS: Silica exposure is associated with lung cancer at low exposure levels. Exposure-response relationship was robust and present regardless of smoking, silicosis status, and cancer subtype. PMID: 32330394 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Getting (to the Value) of Value In Health Care
By SUSAN DENTZER How would you judge the value of your health care? A longstanding definition of treatment holds that value is the health outcomes achieved for the dollars spent. Yet behind that seemingly simple formula lies much complexity. Think about it: Calculating outcomes and costs for treating a short-term acute condition, such as a child’s strep throat, may be easy. But it’s far harder to pinpoint value in a long-term serious illness such as advanced cancer, in which both both the outcomes and costs of treating a given individual—let alone a population with a particular cancer—may be unknown for years. And ...

The positioning of palliative care in acute care: A multiperspective qualitative study in the context of metastatic melanoma.
This study explores the transition to the palliative care process in the acute care context of metastatic melanoma. METHOD: A theoretical framework drawing on interpretive and critical traditions informs this research. The pragmatism of symbolic interactionism and the critical theory of Habermas brought a broad orientation to the research. Integration of the theoretical framework and grounded-theory methods facilitated data generation and analysis of 29 interviews with patients, family carers, and healthcare professionals. RESULTS: The key analytical findings depict a scope of palliative care that was uncertain f...

Skin Cancers and Lung Transplant
This article will provide an overview of the risk factors for the development of cutaneous malignancies in organ transplant recipients as well as a detailed discussion of various immunosuppressant and prophylactic medications used in this patient population that contribute to the risk of developing cutaneous malignancies, with an emphasis on NMSC (cSCC and BCC) in lung transplant recipients. Finally, this article includes a discussion on the clinical and dermatologic management of this high-risk immunosuppressed population including a review of topical and systemic agents for field therapy of actinic damage and chemopreven...

Culture Change is Here: People are Price-Shopping for their Health Care
Culture change is here. People are upset about rising health care prices and rising out-of-pocket expenses. In fact, they’re so upset that they’re acting like consumers, by shopping around for their health care, and by sharing information, and by complaining about their outrage. And that’s a good thing. When I founded clearhealthcosts.com a few years ago, I announced: “We’re bringing transparency to the health care marketplace by telling people what stuff costs.” People laughed at us. They said it was impossible. We heard every objection you can imagine. And now: price transparency is a primary topic at confere...
